The Capstone Design Laboratory replaces the previous Project/Problem-Based Laboratory for all 4th Year students.
This course is known as the Capstone Project, with the same course code: SEEE/L/M 4723.
The Capstone Project serves as a key requirement in your engineering program, recognized by the Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC).
It provides an opportunity to demonstrate the full range of knowledge and skills gained throughout your studies.
Students are expected to design a meaningful product or service and tackle a real-world, open-ended problem in electrical engineering.
1. Technical Requirements
Every project must include both a microcontroller and programming elements.
Projects must not be purely plug-and-play or software-only. A balanced integration of hardware and software is required.
2. Product Presentation
A proper casing is mandatory. The final prototype should resemble a market-ready product, not a raw or unfinished setup.
3. Circuit Implementation
Use a Printed Circuit Board (PCB), donut board, or strip board for the final build.
Breadboards are not allowed in the final product.
4. Budget Support
The faculty provides a maximum of RM 300 in support for each project. Plan your expenses accordingly.
5. Timeline & Deliverables
Project development must be completed within 12 weeks.
Week 5: Submit a 3-minute conceptual prototype video as part of the conceptual presentation.
Week 13: Submit a 3-minute final prototype video for the final presentation.
Week 14: Submit the final report.
6. Prototype Testing
The final prototype must be tested either on-site or at a designated testbed to demonstrate functionality.
7. Sustainability Requirement
Each project must incorporate at least one Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). Ensure your design aligns with global sustainability efforts.
8. Group-Specific Specifications
Additional technical requirements—such as minimum number of sensors, IoT integration, and software features—may vary across C, E, M, and P groups.
Refer to your group coordinator for specific guidelines
9. Attendance Policy
A minimum of 80% attendance is required.
If absent due to official UTM programs, submit a UTM endorsement letter.
If absent due to illness, submit a Medical Certificate (MC) issued by the UTM University Health Centre. [Academic Guidelines].
1. 📅 Final Submission Deadline
All final materials—poster, video, and photo—must be submitted before 7 January 2026 (subject to change).
Late submissions will not be accepted for EECS awards, and your poster will not appear on the EECS website.
2. 👥 Peer Review Requirement
Peer reviews contribute directly to your group work grade.
Failure to submit your peer review may result in a 2 to 3 grade drop.
Confirm with your facilitator that your peer review has been successfully received and accepted.
3. 📄 Claim Documentation
For any claims, ensure your documentation is complete.
Incomplete documents will not be processed—double-check before submission.
4. ⏱️ Weekly Activity Commitment
You must spend at least 9 hours per week on Capstone-related activities.
This includes 3 hours of weekly meetings with your facilitator.
Your Gantt Chart must reflect this time commitment clearly.
5. 🧾 Individual Report Guidelines
Your individual report must only include tasks you personally completed.
Do not include tasks done by other group members.
Students are required to obtain the following confidential documents. Ask your facilitator for:
Course Information (CI)

Make sure to check the Claim Flowchart in Section 1.6.
Plan your purchase properly. The more receipt you split, the more documentations you have to do.
Each purchase details needs to be added in Bill of Materials (BoM) in Google Classroom. Fail to to do so may lead to fail claim process.
Make sure to check FKE Component Store list first before purchase the components for the project. If the components is available in the FKE Component Store, your claim may not be process.
Provide original receipt to facilitator/AE. However, for safety (commonly, the receipt ink disappear after a month), scan and print the receipt. Sent the printed receipt together with the original receipt to facilitator/AE.
If the shop provide generic receipt (don't have any info about the shop in the receipt), ask the shop to stamp and sign the generic receipt.
If the shop provide invoice instead of receipt, pay using debit card and provide both invoice and debit card receipt to the facilitator/AE. Another alternative is to ask for the shop to generate receipt if possible.
If the receipt is small (smaller than A4 paper) and single-side only, glue the receipt on A4 paper. You can combine the receipt together
Make sure to provide 3 documents for each purchase (each purchase can consists of multiple items):
Online Receipt
Online bank statement (show name, account number, payment transaction)
Proof of Delivery
Print single-side only
Make sure to check whether your peer reviews are already accepted or not in the list provided below. One fail submission of the peer review can results in 2 to 3 grades drop.
