Session Oct 24 - Jan 25
- Introduction
1.1. Overview
Capstone design laboratory to replace the Project/problem based laboratory for 4th Year students beginning session 2015/2016-1
Known as Capstone Project (course code remains as SEEE/L/M 4723)
Capstone project is a major component of any engineering curriculum
Showcase of knowledge and skills acquired over the years of studies, design a product/service of significance, and solve an open-ended problem in electrical engineering
Satisfies requirement by Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC)
1.2. Specification
Needs to have microcontroller AND programming. The project cannot only plug and play. The project also cannot software/program based only.
Proper casing for the project is mandatory. The end result should resemble a marketable product.
Printed Circuit Board (PCB), donut board, or strip board is compulsory (no breadboard in end product).
Faculty only support RM 300 for the project.
Project needs to be completed within 12 weeks (final presentation at week 13 and final report submission at week 14).
Apply at least 1 Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) in the project.
Attendance must be above 80%. If absent, need to provide official UTM letter if join any program or medical certificate (MC) from UTM University Health Centre if you are sick. [Academic Guidelines].
For conceptual presentation in Capstone Week 5, it is compulsory for the students to produce a 3 minutes conceptual prototype video. While for final presentation in Capstone Week 13, it is compulsory for the students to produce a 3 minutes final prototype video.
The final prototype needs to be tested on-site or at testbed.
Additional specification such as minimum number of sensor, internet of things (IoT), and software requirement may differ between C, E, M, and P groups. Refer to your group coordinators specifications.
1.3. Important Notices
Final Material Submission (Poster, Video, Photo) for EECS needs to be submitted before the set due date, 7 January 2025 (subject to potential changes). Submission after the due date will disqualify you from receiving any of the EECS awards. Your poster also will not be included in the EECS website.
Peer reviews becomes the weightages for the group work. Fail to submit peer review will result significant grade drop (2 to 3 grade drop). Ask your facilitator to check whether your peer review has been accepted or not.
For claim purpose, please make sure the documentation is completed. Incomplete documentation will not be process.
You are required to do activity related to this course at least 9 hours per week (this include 3 hours meeting with facilitator). This needs to be reflected in the Gantt Chart.
Individual report cover the task done by each individual only. Do not report any task done by other member.
1.4. CONFIDENTIAL DOCUMENTS
Student must have these confidential documents. Ask your facilitator for:
Course Information (CI)
Rubric
Student Pack
Design Sheet
For facilitator, please open the Facilitator and AE website (click here) under All Department to download Course Information (CI) and Rubric.
1.5. SCHEDULE & ASSESSMENT
If any special holiday is announced for Monday, a replacement session will need to be arranged between your group and the facilitator within that week.
All students will be reassigned to new groups regardless of their registered section, as whole Mondays are dedicated to capstone activities. Please ensure you adjust your schedule if you have other courses scheduled on Mondays.
1.6. CAPSTONE PROCEDURE
The PDF contain page hyperlinks (the trapezium is clickable). If you unable to click in website, please download the PDF to fully utilize the flowchart.

2. Group
Check your name in ALL the TAB of the Google Sheet below. Group change request by student is not accepted. All project under different division are equivalent (require to design a product with microcontroller to solve problem). The different is only on the application of the project (https://www.youtube.com/@eecs4372/playlists)
All students will be reassigned to new groups regardless of their registered section, as whole Mondays are dedicated to capstone activities. Please ensure you adjust your schedule if you have other courses scheduled on Mondays.
For those who just register capstone (during academic week 1 and 2) and still don't have the group, please fill this form as soon as possible to obtain the group number. https://forms.gle/EPZwKttitDkp6hJa9
3. Student WhatsApp Groups
Students need to join 3 WhatsApp Groups, Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary WhatsApp Groups.
For general announcement, the Primary WhatsApp Group is used.
For group specified announcement (Group C, E, M, or P), the Secondary WhatsApp Group is used. DO NOT JOIN ANY GROUP OTHER THAN YOUR DESIGNATED ONE.
For discussions between the facilitator and group members, please join your specific Tertiary WhatsApp Group. DO NOT JOIN ANY GROUP OTHER THAN YOUR DESIGNATED ONE.
3.1. Primary WhatsApp Group
This group consists of all students and all coordinators.
Note that this is only for SEEE, SEEL and SEEM students. For SEBB students, please contact BIOMEDIC coordinator, Dr. Ikhwan for information.
3.2. Secondary WhatsApp Group & Group Website
These groups consist of specified group C, E, M, and P students and corresponding coordinator.
3.3. Tertiary WhatsApp Group
These groups consist of specified students (3 to 4 members) and their corresponding facilitator.
If your group does not have a link in the Google Sheet, any student or facilitator from your group may create a WhatsApp Group and add the link to the Google Sheet provided.

7. Claim Procedure & Documentation
7.1. Claim Procedure
Make sure to check the Claim Flowchart in Section 1.6.
7.2. Component Store
7.3. Independent Claim Documentation
Important Notes:
Plan your purchase properly. The more receipt you split, the more documentations you have to do.
Each purchase details needs to be added in Bill of Materials (BoM) in Google Classroom. Fail to to do so may lead to fail claim process.
Make sure to check FKE Component Store list first before purchase the components for the project. If the components is available in the FKE Component Store, your claim may not be process.
In-Store Purchase
Provide original receipt to facilitator/AE. However, for safety (commonly, the receipt ink disappear after a month), scan and print the receipt. Sent the printed receipt together with the original receipt to facilitator/AE.
If the shop provide generic receipt (don't have any info about the shop in the receipt), ask the shop to stamp and sign the generic receipt.
If the shop provide invoice instead of receipt, pay using debit card and provide both invoice and debit card receipt to the facilitator/AE. Another alternative is to ask for the shop to generate receipt if possible.
If the receipt is small (smaller than A4 paper) and single-side only, glue the receipt on A4 paper. You can combine the receipt together
Online Purchase
Make sure to provide 3 documents for each purchase (each purchase can consists of multiple items):
Online Receipt
Online bank statement (show name, account number, payment transaction)
